Welcome to Speech and Language Therapy at Seminole Elementary. Effective communication is necessary for success in school. It is essential for all Seminole Eagles to be confident and effective communicators.

What is Communication
Communication refers to the different ways we give and receive messages.  Communication involves receptive language, expressive language, articulation, fluency, voice, hearing and pragmatics.

Receptive Language
Receptive Language is the ability to understand what others are saying.

Expressive Language
Expressive Language is the ability to express thoughts, feelings or ideas verbally or in writing.

Articulation or Phonology
Articulation is the ability to pronounce speech sounds.  Phonology refers to the pattern of speech sounds.

Fluency
Fluency is the smoothness in which sounds, syllables, words and phrases are joined together when speaking.

Voice
Voice is the production of sound using the vocal cavity. Areas of vocal production include quality, pitch, nasality and volume.

Hearing
Hearing is the sense that allows an individual to hear what is being said.

Pragmatics
Pragmatics is the area of language function that embraces the use of language in social contexts: knowing what to say, how to say it and when to say it.
